Happy Follow Friday! Click on the pic to be taken to a whole slew of new book blogs. The question of the day:
Q: What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books? Maybe you don’t like love triangles or thin plots? Tell us about it!
Ultimately, my MAIN pet peeve is whiny insecure female protagonists. I don't mind insecurity in my heroines...but it should be realistic and not based solely on looks or the approval of a man (argh!!! the whole "I'm not pretty" insecurity is soooo annoying). Authors are walking a fine line when trying to deal with these issues...I have no advice other than, make the heroine multi-dimensional (don't make her all-consumed by her insecurities). This never seems to happen with male protagonists...a reflection on society? Mayhaps.Anyways, that is my main stress-inducer whilst reading...however, a close second would definitely be unnecessary love triangles. If it seems forced, I HATE it! I mean, c'mon now! The love triangle thang can only be played out for so long without getting tired. And unless it is genuine, it's just insulting to read. Those are my main gripes...what about you folks?
I hate the "I'm not pretty" conflict. Even if that's true, get over it. There are starving children in the world, and your whining about being chubby. That makes you shallow.

Ugh, I agree. Insecure characters are annoying. Why do authors think that readers want to read about a girl's insecurities about whether a boy likes her. If he doesn't like you, move on to someone who does!

Forced love triangle are just, meh, they aren't interesting enough. Some are good, some just blah.

Oh my goodness YES to the love triangle. Sure fire way to drive me nuts.
ReplyDeleteAnd I completely agree with you about the whiny insecure heroine. Inevitably prince Charming Is going to come along, tell her she's gorgeous and fix all her problems. What kind of example is that setting? *sigh*

Hopping through. I don't mind a little insecurities. I certainly didn't think I was pretty as a teen. But there comes a point where weakness is too annoying.

An annoying protag will definitely drag a book down. Plus it makes the novel hard to finish because you have to put up with them for 300+ odd pages. Eeeck!

Yes, undeveloped insecurity seems like a cop out to me. I know that some people are hyper sensitive, but constantly whining about your looks or your lack of boyfriend or whatever really starts to wear on a reader. I want characters that I care about and someone like that doesn't really inspire much feeling beyond irritation.
