Friday Hop

Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger Hop hosted by  Click on the icon above to be taken to a list of book's enjoyable to peruse and you may just find a couple of fun blogs to follow!  This week's question:

“In honor of Banned Books Week, what is your favorite “banned or frequently challenged book”?”

Answer: His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.  This series is soooo good and seriously misunderstood by the Christian (mainly Catholic) community.  This misunderstanding caused a great controversy surrounding these books.  In fact, I once recommended this series to a young reader and her mother was furious about it once the mother's friend told her the books are "anti-Christian."  I disagree wholeheartedly with that statement but if you only look at the books at the most surface-level and ignore the (quite obvious) themes then I suppose you could make that mistake.

Ah banned books - isn't it funny that the most frequently challenged books also happen to be excellent (often award-winning) books?

  1. I have never read His Dark Materials trilogy. Seeing how much you liked the books I am going to add them to my TBR list.

  2. I've only read the first book but I never understood how they were considered "anti-Christian".

  3. @ Alison - I couldn't really point it out without being spoilery...but it's still silly that people took one plot point and arranged an "anti-Christian" argument around it.

  4. I've never heard of this series but I think these people who are upset pick out words rather than reading the context in which the words are written.
The best books make you think and question. That's not a bad thing.

  5. thanks for stopping by at my blog. now following u

  6. Never heard of this book either.Just blogging by.

  7. I've not read it but I hear that I should. I'm think Twenty Boy Summer and Speak, they were both good.

  8. I ADORE the Dark Materials books. I am a Christian and I never once felt offended nor could I see why people were making such a fuss.
    They are such good books.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a great weekend. :D

  9. For some reason I just never got that into this series when i read it awhile ago, but you're definitely in the majority. Glad you enjoy banded books!!!

    Have a great weekend!

  10. I agree. People challenge books because they don't understand them (or don't read them). That's my theory anyway.

  11. These are my favorite ones too. Down here in Eastern NC (where I live), even my librarian (who I totally LOVE) said to me when I grabbed this series one day: "Honey, I can't believe you're gonna read these books."

They're just so wonderful and the world Pullman created is SO MUCH FUN. And I'm entertained by it. And that is why I read them over and over and over. That is all.

Excellent choice. Same answer I would've chosen!
